An unusual shape antique antique sterling silver butter dish,an example of classic style antique sterling holloware with a classic border and the Art Nouveau influence of flowers, with exceptional applied ornamental flowers, stems, and leaves on the front and on the back. It has an unique shape, very different from most butter dishes. The lid has a floral finial which unscrews from the inside with the original nut.

Evidence strongly suggests that the originator of the die-stamped antique flatware pattern Medallion was the great nineteenth century manufacturer John R. Wendt. On May 13, 1862 United States design patent 1580 was issued in his name. Quotes from the patent support the theory that his was the first die-cut medallion.
