Rare Early American blown flip, Stiegel type, 1769-1779 period. Ribbed, clear glass, sides spreading slightly to plain rim, decorated by long narrow molded sunken panels, at top copper wheel engraving. See Plate 22 in American Glass by McKearin. A large drinking glass, no stem, no handle, often with a lid perhaps modeled after metal versions, that held the drink 'flip. Tiffany’s Persian pattern was introduced in 1872 and became inactive before 1904. The ornamentation is complex, with flowers and foliage interwoven in a network of arches and swirls,and with geometric shapes; it is based upon the interlocking scrollwork seen in the arts of the Islamic world. Plique-a-Jour is a transparent backless colored enamel which is applied to specially prepared surfaces which allows light to stream through the enamel creating a beautiful stained glass effect. The transparent tip design of this fork is green, red, and gold enamel enclosed in twisted wire cells forming a delicate design.
