| Between 1800 to approximately 1860 the United States was the principal market for all Chinese Export porcelain, although there was virtually no production from 1839 to 1860 because of China’s Opium Wars. By 1890 the United States government required all imports to be marked with their country of origin, hence "CHINA" or "MADE IN CHINA" is displayed on the foot of the later wares, simplifying the dating process. The U.S. Stamp Act of 1894 mandated the imprint of “Made In China” on all export porcelains. This jar has no marks on the bottom, no removals so according to the above data this jar probably dates prior 1839. Height 8 1/2", top opening 3 1/2",base 8 1/2" diameter. It is a larger size than is usually seen. No lid. Very desirable dark blue. It is unusual to see the design covering three quarters of the circumference. The detailed hand painting on this jar has more style than is seen on later pieces. There is a "not to worry about" spider crack in the base, and a couple minute base chips, not seen unless you examine closely. All white spots in the pictures are not on the jar. Nice glaze. It would be a wonderful lamp. Would you like it done for you? | ||
